August 15, 2017 - To Build or to Buy in Belize

While many people moving to Belize will want to rent where they live, others will want to own their own home. If that’s you, you’ll have to decide whether you want to build a custom home, or buy a home that already exists in Belize. Talk with a contractor to learn more about building a custom home, but also take the time to consider the pros and cons of each option and whether building is the right thing for you. Read on to learn about some of the benefits and downfalls that building comes with and really consider whether you want to build or buy in Belize.

Consider the Time Investment
Building a home takes serious time and it’s not something that everyone is willing to wait for. Even though you’ll likely be able to get a home that meets your needs more closely when you have it custom built, you could be waiting many months before you can make your move. If time is an issue for you, you may want to consider just buying a home in Belize instead. Another option is to rent a place in Belize while your final home is being built, then you can just make the move after it’s finished. This lets you keep an eye on construction as well, which is important.

Consider Your Needs
Many homes in Belize may not have the precise features that you are used to having. Homes are set up a bit differently in Belize which will take some getting used to. They may lack closet storage space you are used to. Perhaps they will have smaller bedrooms or fewer bathrooms that you are accustomed to. If you’re a particularly picky homeowner, or you know exactly what you want out of your home, you might be disappointed with the homes that you find on the market in Belize. In that case it makes much more sense to build a custom home that’s going to meet all your needs, rather than settling for something that you simply don’t like.

Custom Built Homes May Not Be Designed for the Climate as Well
This isn’t necessarily true, but an expat building a home in Belize may make mistakes about how to have the home built if they are more used to a more northern climate. Older homes in Belize are generally designed to minimize heat buildup inside the house, and that’s something that many homeowners from other climates simply don’t consider. If you do decide to build, make sure to work with a contractor that’s familiar with the climate and understands how to make a comfortable house that doesn’t rely on heavy amounts of air conditioning to cool them down.

Building a Home is More Difficult
Buying a home in Belize and moving in is simple if you have the funds to do so. Building a home, even if you have the funds, isn’t so simple. You’ll have to go through much more planning, choosing and monitoring to get the idea of your home turned into a finished product. This is something that some people enjoy, but many people find the process tiresome. If you don’t want to deal with all the steps involved with building a home, and there are a lot of them, you should just go ahead and buy one instead.

For some people buying a home is the obvious answer, but for many others building makes a whole lot more sense. Consider your needs and the benefits that a custom-built home will offer you, and then decide which option is the right one for you.
